A few administrative things to take care of. ¥ellow Peril appears today because Sue has finals today and tomorrow. The Grrls will be back on Wednesday. This would make you think that Titanium Moose would appear on Friday. But I've decided to take a break for the rest of the month. Now, you might think that I'm taking time off for vacation (i.e. Halo). But I'll have you know (1)that James and I beat Halo and are no longer in its addicting grip and (2)I have a back log of projects that I'd like to actually finish up before the end of the year including a run of Fans which I think will be running on T's site in the new year. If you haven't read his stuff, go now. So it's a working break. I don't know what Sue plans to do with The Grrls for the break, but I'm guessing she'll need some time to recover from Senior-itis and finals.

So for those who can't wait for the next update (I know, I hate it when my favorite webcomics don't update) I appologize. I will tell you all that there will be new stuff the first week in January so tune in then to see new comics. And hey, you should be doing other things than sitting at a computer during the holidays anyway. Onto the soap bo...rant...

I've noticed that a great many Chinese restaurants, hell, many Asian restaurants put something blatantly Asian in their names. Let me run down a few examples: Fujis, Shushi Chalet, Hinode, Old Siame, Panda Express (btw, pray for the new babies. We killed the last few pandas, I hope the new ones make it), Great China, Taipei Tokyo Cafe. Then there are the not so blatant places like Golden Dragon which makes you think of Ang Lee's next big film, "Chinky Waiter, Shiny Matre De(sp?)" or Good Fortune which conjours up images of a bearded ancient saying crap like "Confucious say, herow, you want flied lice with fortoon cookie?"

There are a few places that I have been that have not played themselves out for announcing their Asian-ness. Sunflower in Fairfax Virginia is perhaps the only redeeming thing about Norther Virginia. Sunflower is a vegetarian restaurant with some of the best healthy dishes I have ever had the pleasure of feasting upon. I only wish I had a URL with which to further plug them. They do vegetable dishes with a subtle Asian flair that makes for a nice meal and nice atmosphere.

The other place is Danny's in College Park, Maryland. Yes, I know Danny's is a chain. They serve subs and nasty Chinese food. But I go there every once in a while because they have decent sweet and sour soup and their steamed dumplings are not wholey offensive. Since I'm talking about College Park, you must go to Mandalay off of Route 1 near the 193 exit. It's Burmese cuisine and just about the best damn food in a fifty mile radius of College Park. I know that's not saying a whole lot, but this place is great. Ask for Joe. He'll treat you nice.

Back to my useless mind diarrhea. I think it's a shame that these fine restaurants must play themselves in order to attract clients. I guess even in this enlightened age, we still live in a world that must catagorize and seperate things into bite sized pieces in order to understand them. If I told you of a good place to eat that was called Sunbeam, you'd have absolutely no clue what type of place. This would probably lead to a long conversation featuring me, most likely, ranting and raving about some feature or dish that is characteristic of the place (yes, I write the way I talk. Very hyperbolic and verbose. How do people put up with my shit?). If I told you of a place called Chicky Emporium of Buddha Goodness, right away you'd know that there's a ninety nine percent chance that the cook is an Asian man of wide stature and that the waiters will shout orders at him in a language that you will not understand, even if you know the language.

It's a shame, really. I mean, we'd like to think that in America that we can all be ourselves, label free, that we can be individuals without the need to conform. The ugly truth of the matter is that we cannot cope with things that don't fall into recognized patterns. Even if you say you don't judge people, somewhere in the back of your mind you're already making up catagories for the people you meet. So I guess unless human nature changes, I must resign myself to the horrible fact that some day, someone is going to open up "Chinky Joe's Rice Bowl."

And dammit, I'll be the first in line.

Titanium Moose
The title of this site and the main feature comic. This started out as sort of an anime parody strip. Now it's started into a weekly story line. I know it can be kinda tedious to see a page a week at a time so I'm collecting the pages here so you can click through them all at once if you wish.
