December 12 2001 I haven't confirmed it just yet, but I have a theory that all Chinese restaurants, especially the ones with the signs, use MSG in all of their cooking. I'm pretty sure MSG is really tasty and they use it to entice poor souls who don't know any better. The signs that say "No MSG" are there merely to put patrons in a false sense of security so they will sucumb to the power of MSG. Ever notice how there are only a select few Chinese restaurants that you go to? I'm also pretty certain that General Tso didn't exist. And even if he did, I'm sure he didn't cook his chicken like his current day name sake. I think the good general is much like the fortune cookie, an American invention intended to make Americans think they are tasting authentic Chinky food. That's right, I said Chinky. I say a lot worse when I get going too. I've come to realize that in a project based situation where you have project managers and peons who do the actual work, the companies who keep their peons happy are the ones where the project managers stick up for their peons. This is not the case in a good many situations that I have heard of and experienced. In my ideal world, project managers are there to motivate the peons to earn the company some money. This means that the peons must be happy. A happy peon is a peon who believes that her/his needs are being met by the company. I use the word "believe" because there are ways to socially engire a situation in which a peon believes something when the oposite is the reality. If a peon believes that she/he can go to her/his project manager and express any concern freely, we get a semi satisfied peon. If the peon believes that by going to the project manager with a concern the problem will be addressed, we get a grateful and obediant peon. This is the best situation for the company and for the peon. The company gets a happy peon who in turn does great work. And the peon feels like the company cares and will most likely want to stick around. If a peon believes that the project manager is merely an ass puppet for management, we get a disatisfied peon who may end up leading a revolt of peons who crash the servers before they hand in their resignations. That would be bad. Then the company has to spend more money to hire on expensive contractors who have no idea of what the company really needs. Sounds simple enough. Stick up for your people and you get happy people which will in turn lead to a happy company. Stick up for management and you get confrontational people who will leave your company. I doubt that there are very many, if any at all, project managers who read this stuff. But if there are any out there, I want to impress upon you one thing. Have the courage of your convictions to stand up for the people on your team. You may be going against management at times, but at least you'll stand for something greater than yourself. And you'll be able to look yourself in the mirror. Kinda random, but that's where this comic comes from. Thanks for watching. Got questions about this strip? Post them on our BBS.
The best place to find manga making stuff including manga paper and G pen nibs (which I use to ink)
