Introducing Bodey Guy, a character based on someone I worked with. There are only a few more characters I have to introduce so bear with me for a bit.
Children are always the hidden victim in any war, mostly because no one pays attention to what they have to say. But I fear that this current conflict may be hardest on Arab American children. Nothing is more shocking than to see people like yourself being bombed and starved by your own government.
I can only imagine that it must be something like the experience of Japanese Americans during World War II. In that case, many Japanese American, including some of my aunts and uncles, were stripped of their rights and taken from their homes while their own government bombed and killed people who looked like them. It must have been quite confusing for and young ones.
No, we have not relocated Arab Americans (though I have heard call-in radio programs where callers advocate closing of borders and jailing of Arab Americans). No, we have not officially stripped them of their rights. But what about their rights to be Americans? How can you feel American when your fellow Americans tell you that you are responsible for the deaths of September 11?
I don't pretend to have the answers. But I do know that the children of America need to be told just who we are fighting. We are not fighting Arabs. We are fighting terror. We need to make sure that our children know who to direct their fear or anger towards. They should not fear or hate Arab Americans. They should direct their feelings towards the terror.
