October 3 2001 And with this, we begin a new weekly feature. I decided that since I was going to use the weekly rants for an exploration into the Asian in America, I figured I'd try to do it in a more entertaining fashion with a new comic. Enter Yellow Peril. Our point of view character (that devilishly handsome piece of man flesh with the long hair. Hmmm...seems like I've seen him somewhere before) is Kane Masamune. That's Kane as in "Ka' ne" not the guy who wanders around the old west helping people. He's a graphic designer at some heartless uber dot com. And I'll introduce more of the characters as I get to them. Basically, this stuff is strickly my opinion drawn from my own personal experience. This is by no means intended to represent the Asian experience for all Asians. This particular comic reflects my feeling in my first job out of college. I was working in Northern Virginia which at the time was considered the tech capitol of the world. I was a digital artist at an e-learning company and I wanted to move up the corporate ladder. It was then that I noticed that all of the upper management (who happened to have offices on the top floor above the production floor) were all melanin challenged. To be totally fair, my supervisor was sort of grooming me to take over his responsabilities. And if I had stuck with it and played their game, I might have actually increased the melanin content of upper management. It was only after I left that I discovered my feelings were somewhat justified. It turns out that some of my co-workers were indeed closet racists. One of the people I made friends with while I was there told me about an incident he experienced with two other co-workers. The three of them were taking a smoke break and talking about the usual crap that people who suck on cancer sticks talk about. All three of them happened to be white, which isn't usually a big deal. One of the other two started complaining about one of the janitors who happened to be black. The other one asked, "Which one?" to which the original complainer replied, "Doesn't matter. They all look alike." Another incident occured where my friend was again having conversation with his smoking pals when one of them started to complain about the work of a fellow employee who was black. The other replied, "Well, you know how they are." Though somewhat penniless in my current state, I am quite glad to be rid of that place. I don't understand how you can work next to someone of color and praise their work in one breath, only to taunt that ethnicity in the next. On a more random note, I am still accepting fan art to be included in my 50,000 hit gallery. So far, it looks like it's going to be a rather small gallery. Oh well. I'll take stick figures if you got em. Thanks for watching. Laters. Got questions about this strip? Post them on our BBS.
The best place to find manga making stuff including manga paper and G pen nibs (which I use to ink)
