September 16 2001 Our main characters pay tribute to those who have lost loved ones and those who work to find survivors. Our regularly scheduled programing will resume this week with a rant on Wednesday and the continuation of our story on Sunday. Before I continue into my usual diatribe, please take a moment to pray for the families who have lost loved ones and for the fire fighters and police officers who work twelve hour shifts to rescue possible survivors. If you feel the need to do something, please visit the Red Cross for information on how you can donate blood or make a donation to the Red Cross. Even though hundreds of volunteers have shown their support, every bit counts. There are a few things that concern me. Since Asama Bin Ladin (sp?) has been named as the "prime suspect" in this horrific attack, I have heard of Arab Americans being attacked. This is unacceptable! Arab Americans are still Americans. I prefer not to qualify any American. We are all Americans, regardless of background, religion, or culture. We didn't go out and beat all the white people when the Oklahoma City bombing took place. This behavior digusts me. In a time when we should stand united, there are those who choose to point their anger at their own people. This is insane. If we allow the prosecution of Arab Americans in this country, we loose. We become just like the America of the 1940's, an America that sought to imprisson its own citizens just because they happened to have Japanese backgrounds. We become just like Hitler's Germany, a Germany that stood by while its Jewish citizens were imprissoned and slaughtered. Have we not learned the lessons of history? Arab Americans are NOT the enemy. The enemy is terror. I have also heard of price hiking in the mid west, specifically gas prices. I have also heard of people selling memorabelia from the crash site on ebay. WTF?! Have I missed something here? Why must we profit from the missery of others? Is nothing sacred? To be fair, ebay is now filtering such sales and many of the gas stations in question have reduced their prices to something more reasonable. But seriously folks, what kind of sick F#CK attempts to make a dollar off of something as horrible as this. This is not the time to take advantage of eachother. Now is the time to stand strong against our enemy. One of my mother's co-workers has an eighteen month old child. The kid never played with Legos until recently when he built a tower, broke it in half, and showed his daddy. Hmmm...I think the television media may have gone a bit overboard in its zeal to bring us the latest news. Show the crash once, maybe twice for those who may not have seen it. But do we need to see it from every angle? Yes, I understand that Americans like to see the details of other people's lives. How else could crappy reality based programming like The Real World, Survivor, Big Brother, and the rest bombard our screens every other night. But we don't need to see people jumping to their deaths. We don't need to see a jet disappear into a building. I saw many an interview on Tuesday and Wednesday where the focus was on clips of the World Trade Center exploding. Images like these do more damage than good. We need to see rescue workers pulling survivors from the wreckage. We need to see stories from survivors. We need to see survivors reunited with their families. We need positive imagery so we can tell our children that they live in a nation that can pull together in a crisis. Yes, we may also need to see the horror of the attack. But we don't need to see it all the damn time. We're already fired up and ready to kick some major @$$. Now, we need to see the good that can come of this. My last concern is more a fear than anything else. I have a friend who was in the Marine Corps (I think he may have been in special ops) who is now in the reserves. There is a good possibility that he will be called. He recently had a baby girl and this makes him one of our most dangerous weapons against any enemy. No one fights harder than a man with a family to protect. And he will get the job done. Let there be no doubt. My fear lies in the fact that we have basically declared war on terrorism. We may very well vanquish the perpetrators of this heinous attack very early on, perhaps within the next few weeks. But that alone will not end terrorism. My fear is that we will be engaged in an ongoing war with countless lives lost on both sides. And since our enemy may not be isolated in any one nation, the battle field will extend to all corners of the earth. This war may be more extensive than our "war on drugs" which has been a dismall failure to date. My consolation is that nations around the world have thrown in their support on our war on terrorism. We will not be alone in our fight and perhaps that is why we may very well vanquish terrorism from this Earth. Today I am proud to be American. Today, I am not a hyphenated or catagorized American. I can stand proud and call myself American. I can stand with my American brothers and sisters and live a dream that Marin Luther King, Jr. hoped for. Today, there is no black, white, red, or yellow. Today, we can stand along side our brothers and truly know what it means to be "free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty! I'm free at last!" Whoa, get me off that soap box. My heartfelt thanks go to all the nations of the world who have voiced their support for us in our time of need. Be assured that we will need every bit of help we can get. On a more personal note, during these past few days I have used my anger and frustration to draw some more stuff including some t-shirt designs to be sold sometime soon. Here is a sneak peak at James. I'll post links as soon as they are done. And I will be returning to a regular schedule this week with a rant on Wednesday and the continuation of our story on Sunday. Thanks for bearing with me. Got questions about this strip? Post them on our BBS.
